Two hundred feddans at East Oweinat, in the New Valley, run as four production sectors on one parcel so that the fast cycles pay the running costs while the slow one matures. One hundred and twenty feddans carry 6,240 date palms at 52 palms to the feddan — Medjool and Barhi for the export grades, Siwi for the dry-date and paste trade. Sixty feddans grow Hegazi alfalfa and Panicum, cut through the year and fed on site. Fifteen feddans hold the feedlot, the wells and the buildings. Five feddans of greenhouses raise palm offshoots to planting size. Egypt is the largest date producer in the world and exported 22,546 tonnes in 2024. It also grows only about a third of the feed its own livestock eats. This parcel sits on both sides of that: a long-dated orchard aimed at the export grades, and short-cycle fodder and livestock aimed at a market that is short of both. Water is groundwater from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer, which is fresh here — between 273 and 917 parts per million — and is drawn under a metered abstraction licence.

The groundwater is fossil water with negligible recharge. A published study of East Oweinat found abstraction in 2010-2018 running at about five times the 2000-2009 rate, and piezometric decline of 0.13 to 2.2 metres a year in comparable New Valley oases. The same study puts the field's usable life at roughly 174 years under good management. Abstraction is licensed and metered, and the licence can be varied. Date palms produce nothing for three years and reach the 35 kg per palm plateau only around year seven. Nothing in the orchard is saleable before then. Red palm weevil has been present in Egypt since 1992 and is the main orchard pest. Date prices move: Egyptian wholesale prices were reported 30 to 50 per cent lower in the 2025 season than the year before. Sheep prices carry a large Eid premium that does not hold through the year. Feed is the dominant cost in the feedlot and Egyptian feed prices roughly doubled through 2025. Summer heat at this site reaches 46 degrees. The parcel depends on a small number of deep wells; losing one is a production event, not an inconvenience.
