Customs Intelligence Peshawar highlights smuggling trends

The Directorate of Customs I&I (Intelligence and Investigation) Peshawar has highlighted smuggling trends helping other field formation by disseminating timely intelligence reports to foil any attempt of the smuggling of non-duty and contraband goods within its jurisdiction.

The Directorate has foiled various attempts of smuggling of goods and narcotics during first quarter of financial year 2023-24. In line with the vision of Faiz Ahmad Chadhar, Director General, Intelligence and Investigation Customs Islamabad, the Directorate of I&I (Customs)-FBR, Peshawar has performed extraordinary to curb the menace of smuggling in area of its jurisdiction.

According to document shared by Directorate of Customs I&I Peshawar showed that During the 1st Quarter of (Financial Year) FY2023-24, the Directorate has registered cases of smuggled goods valuing Rs. 239.55 million as compared to previous 1st Quarter of FY2022-23 as Rs. 93.48 million, showing an increase of 156% in terms of value.

The Directorate has seized 29 numbers of (non-duty paid) NDP smuggled vehicles valuing Rs. 97.43 million during the 1st Quarter of 2023-24 as compared to 13 numbers of vehicles seized during previous year 1st Quarter valuing Rs. 41.90 million, showing an increase of 133% in terms of value.

The document showed that on the special directions of the Director General, the Directorate of I&I Peshawar carried out special anti-smuggling campaign against cigarettes and had seized various brands 2,038,800 sticks of foreign origin cigarettes valuing Rs. 73.18 million during 1st Quarter of 2023-24, as compared to seized 618,400 sticks valuing Rs. 6.81 million during previous year’s 1st Quarter, showing increase of 975% in terms of value of the cigarettes.

During the first quarter July to September FY2023-24 the Directorate of Peshawar received revenue of Rs.130.38 million through auction of smuggled goods and NDP vehicles with an increase of 13% against the same period of correspondence year’s 1st Quarter 2022-23 the document said.
