Pakistan-Afghan border crossing Torkham closed for second day after clashes

The Additional Director Customs at Torkham said that main border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan was closed on second day (thursday) after clash between Pak Afghan forces.

According to incident report issued by MCC Peshawar on Wednesday said that on 06-09-23 at 1200 hrs, border gate was closed from both sides over a dispute of construction of check post between security officials of Pakistan and Afghan side vehicular and passenger traffic has stopped as a result.

Heavy firing from both sides has started at border at 1215 hrs.
Customs Officials have been instructed to adopt precautionary measures till situation improves.

Pakistan’s main border crossing with Afghanistan was closed leading to a build-up of trucks laden with goods, after clashes between security forces from the two countries news agency Reuters said.

Reuters further said that Abdul Basir Zabuli, a spokesman for the Taliban-led police in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, where the crossing lies, said that authorities from both countries were trying to determine the reason for the clash.The Torkham border point is the main point of transit for travellers and goods between Pakistan and landlocked Afghanistan.

Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, director of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said hundreds of trucks laden with fruit, vegetables and other goods were stuck due to the closure.

“The traders are suffering heavy losses after the border in Torkham was closed on Wednesday following a firing incident there,” he told Reuters.
